Indigenous Cattle Society Aims and Objectives

Indigenous Cattle Society is always ready to help farmers,the society aims and objectives are as follow:


1. To help the farmers  in production of good quality milk and selling it at profitable price.
2. To provide indigenous bulls having high genetic merits and their semen to farmers.
3. To work on cowdung and urine to make best use of the animal waste. Ex. Vermicompost, mosquito repellent, cow urine ark etc.
4. To produce milk free from pesticide residues by using organic farming techniques of feed and fodder.

Breeds of Cattle in India

India is well known for its indigenous cattle breeds.Following are the cattle breeds of India.


1.Sahiwal Cattle:

Sahiwal is a breed of Zebu Cattle which primarily is used in dairy production. Sahiwal basically originated from the Sahiwal district of Punjab Province in Pakistan.It produces the most milk among all Zebu breeds.



Sahilwal cattle characteristics:

  • High milk yields
  • Tick and parasite resistance
  • Heat tolerant
  • Ease of calving
  • Drought resistant
  • Bloat tolerant
  • Good temperament

2.Rathi Cattle:

Rathi, also synonymous with its variant Rath, is a breed of cattle indigenous to India. It originated in the region of the state of Rajasthan consisting of Bikaner, Ganganagar and Hanumangarh districts. It is an important dual purpose cattle breed of India known for both its milking and draught prowess.


  • Well known Draft breed
  • Originated from Sahiwal and Tharparkar breed


3.Tharparkar Cattle:


Tharparkar breed originates from district named Tharparkar in Sindh province of Punjab in Pakistan and also found in Rajasthan,India.It is a dual purpose breed known for both its milking and draught potential.


  • High Milk producing cow breed.
  • Available in all places of Pakistan and some other countries of Asia.
  • The cattle is of medium to large build and have white to gray skin.
  • Bullocks are quite suitable for ploughing and casting the cows yield 1800 to 2600 kgs of milk per lactation period.

4.Gir Cattle:

The origin of the breed is in the Gir forest region and surrounding districts of Saurashtra region of Gujrat State. It is a moderate to large size breed. The females average 385 kg with a height of 130 cm and the males average 545 kg with a height of 135 cm. The average milk yield for the Gir is 1590 kg per lactation, with a record production of 3182 kg at 4.5% fat in India. In Brazil they average 3500 kg per lactation, with a world record production of 17.120 kg by the cow Profana de Brasília.




  • Basic colors of skin are white with dark red or chocolate-brown patches or purely red.
  • Breed well known for its hardiness and disease resistant.
  • Horns are peculiarly curved,giving a half moon appearance.
